Arthur Sadoun – Addressing the stigma and insecurities of working with cancer

Usually when I am talking to Arthur Sadoun, Chairman and CEO of Publicis Groupe, we discuss the international marketing and communications industry and business in general. But today is a very different conversation because Arthur shares with me an open, honest and vulnerable account of his journey with cancer.  From how it was discovered, how he has felt through his treatment as well as the challenging navigation and decisions around how, who and when to share the news with his loved ones with his company, the Plc board and client and business networks.

You will be drawn in by Arthur’s charming, kind and entertaining personality and that is before you even hear him talk about the incredible campaign ‘Working With Cancer’ he launched through the Publicis Groupe at the World Economic Forum at DAVOS, to address the sigma of living with a cancer diagnosis at work.

50% of people diagnosed with cancer are afraid to tell their employer about their diagnosis, despite 92% feeling that support at work positively impacts their health. I have been living with Cancer for 13 years, so I am delighted to be working with Arthur and his brilliant Publicis team on this much needed campaign and he explains how easy it is for every business to sign the pledge and get involved.

Cancer affects us all, directly or in-directly so I’m sure this conversation will resonate you and I’m so very grateful to Arthur for sharing his personal story and even more for launching this campaign. He is in so many ways an extraordinary man.

If you found this conversation inspiring please forward it to your colleagues and friends and if you can sign the pledge, however small or large your company, see the links below.

Rik Moore – How comedy can help you perform better at work

Rik Moore, Managing Partner, Strategy, The Kite Factory takes me on a wonderful journey of how he merged two things he loves to create his unique space in business.  Comedy and Media.

It is so important to have a creative outlet and Rik found his initially performing comedy. However, soon he found himself without enough hours in the day, holding down a full-time job in both comedy and media and as a result he was working 300+ hours a month and was missing out socially with friends and family. He had to scale back and did so by merging his two passions together.

Rik identified the similarities and the benefits of bringing his comedy experience into the workplace and talks about how comedy can support confidence, public speaking, meeting preparation, brainstorming and how training in comedy can help you conduct a room in a way that puts everyone at ease. There are so many benefits, and it really highlights the importance and value of making time and embracing our need for a creative outlet and the impact it has on our performance.

He left me with one very important caveat – don’t be a David Brent!!

Dr. Judith Grant – How adversity can trigger post traumatic growth

In this week’s conversation, Dr Judith Grant speaks openly to me about how she suffered with very low self-esteem and bullied for being overweight in her school years. She reset, changed her life-style, built her confidence which inspired her entire career path, supporting individuals and organisations to maximise their wellbeing at work in companies like the Royal Mail and MACE.

Then just three years ago, Judith’s life was seriously impacted by long covid. She openly shares with me a very detailed and emotional reality of her traumatic experiences (some side effects still remain today)  and how during this time, she realised that her personal identity was perhaps far too tied up in work and balance was needed.

Today, Judith has reset once again, by working on her sense of self, learning to slow down, she can speed up.  Listening to her body, setting boundaries, building a support network and appreciating the small wins in everyday life, she can continue to support others and inspire us all.

Mark Bright – Where drive and inner resilience comes from

This week on Reset the podcast I am talking to the talented, charming and brilliant Mark Bright, former Premier League footballer, Ambassador, Crystal Palace FC and author of ‘My Story’ From Foster care to footballer.

My conversation with Mark is simply remarkable and inspirational. Brutally honest, he shares with me how he grew up in Foster care, the impact of being abandoned by his Mum and Dad then growing up with his brother with a loving white family. Living with the racism he encountered throughout his childhood and into his stellar football career. We debate whether it was his upbringing that gave him the extra drive to achieve all he has as a footballer and his subsequent career or if it came from deeper within.

We discuss how Mark has learnt to cope with his past, present and how he has mastered the difficult skill of reflecting upon and accepting losses. You will hear how he gives credit to his incredible resilience, and how he believes it requires a strong recognition that you can’t change the past, but what you can do is give your future 100%, always.  This brilliant mindset is what has helped Mark to get where he is today.

Kenyatte Nelson – The best game to play, is the one where everyone gets a turn

Starting a new role can be daunting for anyone and Kenyatte has spent equal time thinking about the commercial as well as people aspects of his new job as Chief Membership & Customer Officer at Co-op. We discuss the enormous opportunities ahead for him and how he plans to build strong connections with his new team, partners and customers.

Kenyatte has taken time during his ‘gardening leave’ to reflect again on his own personal journey. He shares a previous moment when he reset his approach to work. After he suffered from a panic attack that was mistaken by doctors as a heart attack, he faced the sobering realization that he needed to stop swallowing his worries and avoiding conflict.

As one of the best well known black men in marketing, Kenyatte shares the pressure this puts on him and  how he feels consciously committed to being a representation of the African American male and also the voice for people of colour in traditionally white boardrooms. We discuss how Kenyatte goes above and beyond to ensure all people feel that they belong in the workplace and everyone gets a turn.
